Welcome to the Heat Exchange Institute Website.
Organized in 1933, primarily as a steam condenser organization,
the Heat Exchange Institute’s (HEI) early efforts were concentrated
on developing and publishing heat transfer data. These efforts evolved
into agreements with a well-known university to develop calorimeter
testing procedures that would develop test data and correlate this
with actual field operating data. The information generated was
used to develop and publish product standards.
Subsequently, the membership of the Feedwater Heater Manufacturers
Association transferred to HEI forming a Section within the institute.
The Vacuum Technology Section was added later to address steam jet
ejectors and vacuum apparatus, including liquid ring vacuum pumps.
A Power Plant Heat Exchanger Section and a Deaerator Section were
also added to meet the needs of these segments of the industry.
Today, the Institute’s membership comprises major North American
manufacturers of heat transfer equipment and vacuum apparatus. These
companies address the need for industry standards which reflect
the evolution of technology.
The HEI is acknowledged worldwide as the leading standards development
organization for heat exchange and vacuum apparatus. The HEI maintains
its commitment to the technical advancement of the industry it serves.
Constantly addressing change in technology, the HEI retains its
flexibility to expand its existing sections or form new sections,
depending on the needs of the industry and its member companies.
